When should I plant
Brussels sprouts are a cool-season crop that grows best in cool temperatures. Start seeds indoors 4–6 weeks before the last expected frost for a spring harvest, or sow seeds in late spring to early summer for a fall harvest. In most regions, fall planting is preferred because plants mature best in cool weather and develop sweeter flavor after light frosts.
Site consideration
Brussels sprouts grow best in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. The ideal soil pH is 6.0–7.0. Before planting, work compost or well-rotted manure into the soil to improve fertility and soil structure. Because Brussels sprouts grow tall and remain in the garden for a long season, choose a location protected from strong winds if possible.
Water
Provide consistent moisture throughout the growing season. Plants typically need about 1–1.5 inches of water per week. Uneven watering can slow growth and reduce sprout development. Water at the base of plants rather than overhead to keep the foliage dry and reduce the risk of fungal diseases. Applying mulch around plants helps retain soil moisture and regulate soil temperature.
Sunlight
Brussels sprouts demand full sun for optimal growth and production. Provide at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily, though 8 hours is even better. Adequate sunlight ensures strong, sturdy stalks and well-formed, dense sprouts. Plants grown in too much shade will become leggy, produce fewer sprouts, and be more susceptible to disease.
Seed Germination
Seeds typically germinate in 10–14 days, with soil temperatures are between 60–85°F. Sow seeds about ¼ inch deep and keep the soil evenly moist during the germination period.
Transplant
Transplant seedlings carefully when they are 4 to 6 weeks old and have developed 4 to 6 true leaves. Harden off plants for 7 to 10 days before moving them to the garden, gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions. Space transplants 18 to 24 inches apart in rows 30 inches apart to allow adequate room for root development and air circulation. Plant the seedlings slightly deeper than they were growing in their pots, and water thoroughly after transplanting.

Brussels sprouts are heavy feeders that require consistent nutrition throughout their long growing season. Amend the soil generously with compost or well-rotted manure before planting to provide a strong foundation. About 3 to 4 weeks after transplanting, begin side-dressing with a nitrogen-rich organic fertilizer or compost tea to support leafy growth. Continue fertilizing every 3 to 4 weeks throughout the growing season, as Brussels sprouts need steady nutrition to produce abundant, well-formed sprouts. Avoid excessive nitrogen late in the season, which can produce loose, poorly formed sprouts.
Weed control
Keep the growing area weed-free, especially during early growth. Use organic mulch such as straw or shredded leaves to suppress weeds and maintain soil moisture. Shallow cultivation can help control weeds, but avoid disturbing the plant roots.
Harvest
Harvesting typically begins 85 to 100 days after transplanting, usually in late autumn after the first hard frost. For the sweetest flavor, wait until sprouts have been exposed to several frosts, as cold converts starches into sugars. Harvest from the bottom of the stalk upward, as lower sprouts mature first. Twist or cut sprouts from the stalk when they are firm, compact, and about 1 to 2 inches in diameter. Remove yellowing leaves as you harvest to give upper sprouts more light and air circulation. Plants continue producing from the bottom up over several weeks, and in mild climates, you can harvest throughout winter.
Seed Storage
The seeds will maintain a high germination percentage if stored under proper conditions. How long your seeds remain viable will depend on the temperature and moisture levels the seeds are exposed to. Seeds which are improperly stored will quickly deteriorate if unprotected against high humidity and dramatic temperature fluctuations day after day.

Factors Which commonly Cause Poor Results
