Cilantro Seeds

When should I plant
Plant cilantro seeds in early spring 2-4 weeks before the last frost when the soil is workable. You can also plant again in late summer or early fall, as cilantro is a cool-season herb that bolts in hot weather. Succession plant every 2-3 weeks for continuous leaf harvest. Provide shade in warmer climates to extend its leaf production.

Site consideration
Choose a cool, sunny spot with well-drained, fertile soil (pH 6.2-6.8), ideally with morning sun and afternoon shade to prevent bolting in heat. Provide moisture for germination, then maintain consistent watering. Succession planting helps ensure a continuous harvest. Enriching soil with compost helps. Avoid heavy clay.

Water
Water cilantro seeds by keeping the soil consistently moist but not soggy until germination, gently watering after planting and checking daily; once sprouted, water when the top inch of soil feels dry, aiming for about an inch of water weekly, especially in heat, to prevent quick bolting. Use a watering can or gentle spray, avoiding overhead watering for disease prevention.

Sunlight
Cilantro needs at least 4-6 hours of sun, ideally morning sun and afternoon shade. Full sun works in cooler weather, but in warmer areas, afternoon shade is crucial for a longer leafy harvest, keeping the soil cool and moist.

Seed Germination
To germinate cilantro seeds, gently split the seed husk to separate the two seeds. Soaking seeds in water for 12–24 hours may help improve germination, but direct sowing without pre-treatment also works well. Plant shallowly (1/4 inch deep) in moist, cool soil (around 65-75°F) in a sunny spot, keeping them moist until they sprout in 7-10 days, but avoid heat which makes them bolt (go to seed) quickly. Direct sowing in cool seasons (spring/fall) is best, and succession planting ensures a continuous harvest.

Transplant
Cilantro is best sown directly in the garden due to its sensitive taproot, but if you must transplant seedlings, handle gently, harden them off first, and transplant after the last frost. Thin seedlings to 3-4 inches apart to reduce competition and help prevent bolting

Fertilization
For cilantro seeds, focus on rich, compost-amended soil before planting, as cilantro isn't a heavy feeder and prefers nutrients from organic matter, especially nitrogen for leafy growth. Once seedlings establish, you can use a light, water-soluble, high-nitrogen fertilizer (like 10-6-4 or fish emulsion) every couple of weeks, but stop once it flowers and goes to seed, as fertilizer can reduce flavor and encourage bolting.

Pruning
Harvest outer stems first, cutting above new growth or about 1-2 inches from the base, avoiding more than one-third of the plant at once; snip off any yellow leaves or emerging flower stalks (bolting) to encourage bushier growth and delay flowering, keeping the harvest continuous.

Weed control
For home gardens, focus on mulching, hand-weeding, and dense planting. Chemical herbicides are generally not recommended for small-scale or home use.

Harvest
Snip the outer leaves and stems with scissors when the plant is 6-8 inches tall, leaving the inner growth intact to encourage new leaves. You can cut the entire plant just above the soil line for a final harvest, regrowth is possible in cool conditions but not guaranteed. Regular harvesting prevents the plant from "bolting" (going to seed) and helps ensure a consistent supply of fresh leaves.

Seed Storage
The seeds will maintain a high germination percentage if stored under proper conditions. How long your seeds remain viable will depend on the temperature and moisture levels the seeds are exposed to. Seeds which are improperly stored will quickly deteriorate if unprotected against high humidity and dramatic temperature fluctuations day after day.

Glass jar or plastic containers with snap-on lids works well too, add a packet of desiccant before sealing into the seed, such as silica gel to remove any moisture remains in the storage container. Seed stored under these conditions will remain viable for as long as years.

Factors Which commonly Cause Poor Results
  1. Improper drainage soil
  2. Sowing depth more than one inch
  3. Covering the seed too deep beneath the soil surface
  4. Cover a large area with a small amount of seed.
  5. Plant at a wrong time of a year
  6. Lack of sunlight
  7. Inadequate rainfall after seed germination. The area should not be allowed to become completely dry. Supplemental watering may be required to sustain plant life.
  8. Extreme weather conditions: hail, drought, excessive rainfall, floods, unseasonably cold temperatures.
