When should I plant
Common Milkweed is a hardy native perennial well known for supporting pollinators, especially monarch butterflies. It can be planted in either spring or fall.
Spring Sowing Sow seeds outdoors in early spring after the last frost. For best results, seeds benefit from cold stratification for about 30 days before planting. Seeds can also be started indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost, then transplanted outdoors once seedlings are established.
Fall Sowing Fall sowing is one of the easiest methods. Sow seeds outdoors in late fall when temperatures begin to cool. Winter conditions naturally provide the cold stratification needed to break seed dormancy, allowing seeds to germinate the following spring.
Site consideration
Choose a location with well-drained soil. Common Milkweed adapts well to a variety of soil types including sandy, loamy, or moderately poor soils. It grows well in naturalized areas, wildflower gardens, meadows, and pollinator habitats. Because it spreads through underground rhizomes, it is best planted where it has room to expand.
Water
Keep soil moderately moist during germination and early seedling growth. Once plants are established, Common Milkweed becomes fairly drought tolerant and typically requires little additional watering except during prolonged dry periods.
Sunlight
Common milkweed thrives in full sun, requiring at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily to grow vigorously and flower. While it prefers maximum sun exposure, it can tolerate partial shade, though this may result in fewer flowers.
Transplant
Early spring (just as they sprout) is ideal. Transplants often experience shock (wilting), so choose a cloudy, rainy, or cool day. Select smaller, younger plants (under 12-15 inches), as they suffer less shock than large flowering ones. Use a sharp, long-bladed shovel to dig at least 6–12 inches away from the stem at a 45-degree angle to avoid cutting the main root. Keep the soil intact around the roots and keep them moist. Water thoroughly and consistently for the first 1–2 weeks until established.
Seed Germination
Common milkweed seeds require cold stratification to break dormancy, typically lasting 30 days in a refrigerator. Seeds should be planted 1/8 to 1/4 inch deep in moist, well-draining soil and kept warm and bright for germination, which usually occurs in 14–21 days after planting.
Seeding Rate
Common milkweed seeding rates typically range from 3 to 4 ounces per 1,000 square feet, or roughly 4 to 20 pounds per acre for large-scale projects, depending on desired density.

Fertilization
Common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) generally requires little to no fertilizer, as it thrives in poor soils. If needed, apply a light, balanced, slow-release fertilizer or organic compost in early spring to support growth. Avoid over-fertilizing, which can cause leaf burn, weak growth, or reduced monarch caterpillar attraction.
Weed control
To control the weeds, manually pull weeds or apply mulch (wood chips, straw) to prevent new growth without harming the pollinators. For established gardens, use targeted tools like a weeding fork to remove weeds and their roots, avoiding deep tillage that could break apart the milkweed's rhizomes.
Seed Storage
The seeds will maintain a high germination percentage if stored under proper conditions. How long your seeds remain viable will depend on the temperature and moisture levels the seeds are exposed to. Seeds which are improperly stored will quickly deteriorate if unprotected against high humidity and dramatic temperature fluctuations day after day.

Glass jar or plastic containers with snap-on lids works well too, add a packet of desiccant before sealing into the seed, such as silica gel to remove any moisture remains in the storage container. Seed stored under these conditions will remain viable for as long as years.
Factors Which commonly Cause Poor Results
1. Improper drainage soil
2. Sowing depth more than one inch
3. Covering the seed too deep beneath the soil surface
4. Cover a large area with a small amount of seed.
5. Plant at a wrong time of a year
6. Lack of sunlight
7. Inadequate rainfall after seed germination. The area should not be allowed to become completely dry. Supplemental watering may be required to sustain plant life.
8. Extreme weather conditions: hail, drought, excessive rainfall, floods, unseasonably cold temperatures.
