Fennel

When should I plant
Fennel can be planted in spring, as soon as the frost danger has passed. Start seeds 4-6 weeks before the last frost using biodegradable pots. However, fennel is best grown as a fall crop, as it is prone to bolting in hot weather. For a fall harvest, plant fennel in midsummer.

Site consideration
Choose fertile (pH 6.0-7.0), moist, and well-draining soil. Fennel does best in full sun conditions. Avoid planting in areas where you have planted dill or coriander, as these varieties can easily cross-pollinate with one another.

Water
Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy until germination. Afterward, water deeply once a week, providing about 1 inch of water at the soil level and avoiding weting leaves. Established plants are drought-tolerant but consistent moisture helps prevent wilting and bolting, especially in hot weather.

Sunlight
Fennel seeds need full sun, ideally 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily, for healthy growth, but in hot climates, some afternoon shade helps prevent early flowering (bolting). Plant in rich, well-drained soil, keep it consistently moist (especially for bulb development), and ensure the site gets ample sun for best flavor and leaf production.

Seed Germination
Fennel seeds germinate best with warmth and moisture, ideally in soil temperatures of 60-85°F, sprouting in 7-14 days, though soaking seeds for a day or two beforehand significantly improves success, and they should be planted shallowly (1/4 inch deep) in rich, well-draining soil, kept moist but not waterlogged, with direct sowing in spring or fall being easiest.

Transplant
Transplanting fennel requires extreme care due to its sensitive taproot, which can lead to bolting (premature flowering) if disturbed, so fennel is best direct sown in the garden. If you must transplant, do so gently after frost, thinning to one plant and hardening off seedlings before planting. Snip, don’t pull, the roots to avoid damaging them.

Fertilization
Start with compost-amended soil and use a high-nitrogen feed (like 21-0-0 or fish emulsion) when bulbs begin to form. Avoid over-fertilizing, as it can reduce flavor. A balanced approach with compost and occasional feedings works best for bulb varieties.

Weed control
Weed control for fennel involves manual removal (digging up the taproot when the soil is moist), mulching with tarps to block light, or using natural methods like vinegar or essential oils for weed management. For stubborn weeds, a targeted application of glyphosate or triclopyr may be used, but care should be taken to avoid water contamination.

Harvest
Fennel is ready to harvest after approximately 90 days. Leaves can be harvested once the plant is well established. Harvest only a few leaves at a time to avoid damaging the plant. The bulb is ready when it reaches 3-4 inches in diameter. To harvest, cut the fronds from the base of the bulb. For long-term storage, dry the leaves and store in an airtight container.

Seed Storage
The seeds will maintain a high germination percentage if stored under proper conditions. How long your seeds remain viable will depend on the temperature and moisture levels the seeds are exposed to. Seeds which are improperly stored will quickly deteriorate if unprotected against high humidity and dramatic temperature fluctuations day after day.

For best results, keep the seed in our moisture-proof ziplock sealing bags, which provide a better moisture prevention effect. Glass jar or plastic containers with snap-on lids works well too, add a packet of desiccant before sealing into the seed, such as silica gel to remove any moisture remains in the storage container. Seed stored under these conditions will remain viable for as long as years.

Factors Which commonly Cause Poor Results
  1. Improper drainage soil
  2. Sowing depth more than one inch
  3. Covering the seed too deep beneath the soil surface
  4. Cover a large area with a small amount of seed.
  5. Plant at a wrong time of a year
  6. Lack of sunlight
  7. Inadequate rainfall after seed germination. The area should not be allowed to become completely dry. Supplemental watering may be required to sustain plant life.
  8. Extreme weather conditions: hail, drought, excessive rainfall, floods, unseasonably cold temperatures.
