When should I plant
Johnny Jump-Ups can be planted in either spring or fall, depending on your climate. In cooler regions, early spring sowing is ideal once the soil is workable. In milder climates, fall planting allows seeds to establish before winter for early spring blooms.
Spring Sowing
For spring planting, sow seeds outdoors after the last frost when soil temperatures reach around 50–65°F. Alternatively, start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost for earlier blooms.
Fall Sowing
In regions with mild winters, fall sowing (before the first frost) allows seeds to germinate and establish roots before going dormant. They will bloom early the following spring.
Site consideration
Choose a location with well-draining soil and good air circulation. Johnny Jump-Ups thrive in garden beds, borders, or containers. They tolerate a range of soil types but prefer slightly acidic to neutral pH 5.5–7.0).
Water
Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water deeply once or twice a week, depending on rainfall. Avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal diseases.
Sunlight
These flowers prefer full sun to partial shade. In hotter climates, afternoon shade helps prolong blooming. In cooler regions, full sun encourages vigorous growth.
Seed Germination
Seeds typically germinate in 7–14 days at 60–70°F. Light aids germination, so barely cover seeds with soil or press them lightly into the surface.

Fertilization
Johnny Jump-Ups are light feeders. Mix compost into the soil before planting. If needed, apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer once or twice during the growing season.
Weed control
Mulch around plants to suppress weeds and retain moisture. Hand-pull weeds to avoid disturbing shallow roots. Avoid chemical herbicides, which can damage these delicate plants.
Seed Storage
The seeds will maintain a high germination percentage if stored under proper conditions. How long your seeds remain viable will depend on the temperature and moisture levels the seeds are exposed to. Seeds which are improperly stored will quickly deteriorate if unprotected against high humidity and dramatic temperature fluctuations day after day.
For best results, keep the seed in our moisture-proof ziplock sealing bags, which provide a better moisture prevention effect. Glass jar or plastic containers with snap-on lids works well too, add a packet of desiccant before sealing into the seed, such as silica gel to remove any moisture remains in the storage container. Seed stored under these conditions will remain viable for as long as years.
Factors Which commonly Cause Poor Results
1. Improper drainage soil
2. Sowing depth more than one inch
3. Covering the seed too deep beneath the soil surface
4. Cover a large area with a small amount of seed.
5. Plant at a wrong time of a year
6. Lack of sunlight
7. Inadequate rainfall after seed germination. The area should not be allowed to become completely dry. Supplemental watering may be required to sustain plant life.
8. Extreme weather conditions: hail, drought, excessive rainfall, floods, unseasonably cold temperatures.
