Marigold African Seeds
When should I plant
African marigolds are warm-season plants that are very sensitive to frost. The best time to plant is in the spring after all danger of frost has passed and the soil has had a chance to warm up. For a continuous bloom, you can make successive plantings every 2-3 weeks through early summer.
Spring Sowing
Sow seeds directly into the garden in the spring once the soil temperature has consistently reached 60-70°F. This is typically 1-2 weeks after your last average frost date.
Fall Sowing
In regions with very mild, frost-free winters (USDA zones 9-10), a fall sowing can be successful. Plant seeds in late summer or early fall so that the plants become established before the cooler, shorter days of winter. They will bloom in the fall and may continue through winter if protected from rare cold snaps.
Site consideration
Choose a well-draining site with full sun (6-8 hours daily) and good air circulation to prevent fungal diseases. African marigolds tolerate a wide soil pH range but prefer neutral to slightly acidic conditions (pH 6.0–7.5).
Water
Water deeply at the base of the plant, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. Avoid overhead watering to keep the foliage dry and prevent disease. While established plants are somewhat drought-tolerant, consistent moisture is crucial for producing large, high-quality blooms.
Sunlight
These plants require full sun to flourish. Provide at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight daily. In insufficient light, plants will become leggy and produce significantly fewer flowers.
Seed Germination
Seeds germinate best in warm soil (70-75°F) and typically sprout within 5-14 days. As they do not require light to germinate, cover them with about 1/4 inch of soil. Keep the seedbed consistently moist but not waterlogged during this period.
Seeding Rate
1 oz seeds cover 100-150 square feet.

Fertilization
African marigolds are not heavy feeders. Excessive nitrogen will promote lush foliage at the expense of flowers. If soil is poor, mix in compost at planting time. A light application of a balanced, slow-release fertilizer or one higher in phosphorus (the middle number) can be used to encourage blooming.
Weed control
Control weeds through shallow cultivation or hand-pulling, taking care not to damage the marigold's shallow roots. Applying a layer of mulch (such as straw or bark chips) around the plants is highly effective. Mulch suppresses weeds, conserves soil moisture, and helps maintain an even soil temperature.
Seed Storage
The seeds will maintain a high germination percentage if stored under proper conditions. How long your seeds remain viable will depend on the temperature and moisture levels the seeds are exposed to. Seeds which are improperly stored will quickly deteriorate if unprotected against high humidity and dramatic temperature fluctuations day after day.
For best results, keep the seed in our moisture-proof ziplock sealing bags, which provide a better moisture prevention effect. Glass jar or plastic containers with snap-on lids works well too, add a packet of desiccant before sealing into the seed, such as silica gel to remove any moisture remains in the storage container. Seed stored under these conditions will remain viable for as long as years.
Factors Which commonly Cause Poor Results
1. Improper drainage soil
2. Sowing depth more than one inch
3. Covering the seed too deep beneath the soil surface
4. Cover a large area with a small amount of seed.
5. Plant at a wrong time of a year
6. Lack of sunlight
7. Inadequate rainfall after seed germination. The area should not be allowed to become completely dry. Supplemental watering may be required to sustain plant life.
8. Extreme weather conditions: hail, drought, excessive rainfall, floods, unseasonably cold temperatures.
