When should I plant
Okra is a warm-season crop that should only be planted only after all danger of frost has passed and the soil temperature has warmed to at least 65–70°F. In most regions, this occurs in late spring to early summer. Because okra thrives in hot weather, planting too early in cool soil can delay germination and stunt early growth. In northern climates, start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost, using biodegradable pots to minimize root disturbance when transplanting.
Site consideration
Choose a planting location that receives full sun and has well-drained soil. Okra grows best in fertile soil rich in organic matter with a pH between 6.0 and 7.5.
Before planting, loosen the soil to a depth of about 8–10 inches and mix in compost or aged organic matter to improve soil fertility and drainage. Avoid compacted or poorly drained soils, which can slow root development and reduce plant vigor.
Water
Provide consistent watering throughout the growing season, particularly during flowering and pod formation. Okra performs best with about 1 inch of water per week, either from rainfall or irrigation.
Although okra is relatively drought tolerant once established, prolonged dry conditions can reduce pod size and yield. Apply mulch around the base of plants to help retain soil moisture and regulate soil temperature.
Sunlight
Okra requires full sun for optimal growth and productivity. Plants should receive at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight per day. Warm temperatures combined with strong sunlight encourage vigorous plant growth and steady pod production throughout the summer.
Seed Germination
Okra seeds have a hard seed coat that can slow germination. For best results, soak seeds in water overnight before planting to soften the seed coat and speed up germination. Sow seeds ½ inch deep, spacing them 3 to 4 inches apart in rows 3 feet apart. Seeds typically germinate in 7 to 14 days when soil temperatures are consistently above 70°F.
Transplant
If you started seeds indoors, handle transplants carefully as okra has a taproot that resents disturbance. Harden off seedlings for 7 to 10 days before transplanting outdoors after all frost danger has passed. Space transplants 12 to 18 inches apart in rows 3 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting and protect from any unexpected late cold snaps with row covers if needed. Direct sowing is often preferred because it avoids transplant shock entirely.

Fertilization
Okra is a moderately heavy feeder that benefits from fertile soil and regular feeding. Amend the soil with plenty of compost or well-rotted manure before planting to provide a strong foundation. When plants begin to flower and set pods, side-dress with a balanced organic fertilizer or compost tea to support continued production. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which encourages lush leafy growth at the expense of pod development. Okra is a long-season crop that will produce over many weeks, so maintaining soil fertility throughout the season is important.
Weed control
Keep the planting area weed-free, especially while plants are young and establishing. Apply organic mulch such as straw, shredded leaves, or grass clippings around the base of plants to suppress weeds and conserve soil moisture. Harvest
Clemson Spineless okra is typically ready for harvest 60 days after planting. Harvest pods when they are about 3–4 inches long and still tender.
Pods grow quickly in warm weather, so check plants every 1–2 days during peak production. Frequent harvesting encourages the plant to continue producing new pods throughout the growing season. Overgrown pods can become tough and fibrous, so remove them promptly to maintain plant productivity.
Seed Storage
The seeds will maintain a high germination percentage if stored under proper conditions. How long your seeds remain viable will depend on the temperature and moisture levels the seeds are exposed to. Seeds which are improperly stored will quickly deteriorate if unprotected against high humidity and dramatic temperature fluctuations day after day.
