Oregano Seeds

When should I plant
Plant oregano seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost or direct sow them outside after the last frost has passed and the soil has warmed. If starting indoors, plant the seeds shallowly on the soil's surface, as they need light to germinate.

Site consideration
Oregano enjoys loose, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0 to 7.0, although it can grow in poor soil as long as it’s well-draining.

Water
Oregano is a Mediterranean herb and prefers soil more on the dry side. Usually, an inch a week is sufficient. Let the soil dry out between watering. Water when dry.

Sunlight
Oregano needs full sun, or at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight per day. It thrives in well-drained soil, even sandy or poor conditions, but in hotter climates, providing some afternoon shade can help prevent the plant from getting scorched.

Seed Germination
Oregano seeds need light, warmth (60-70°F), and consistent moisture to germinate, usually within 1-2 weeks, but can be slow. Sow seeds on the soil surface and barely cover them with soil or peat moss, as they require light; keep them moist by misting or using a humid dome.

Transplant
Once the dangers of frost have passed and the seedlings have developed four true leaves, they are ready to be transplanted outdoors. Thin seedlings to 12 inches apart when they reach 6 inches in height. When transplanting, plant the seedlings in a sunny, well-drained area. Oregano can grow in soils with a pH of 6.0 to 8.0 but prefers soils with a pH of 6.0 to 7.0. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole. Once the plant has been established, it requires little care. Water oregano only during long dry periods. Apply hay as mulch around the plants.

Fertilization
Oregano is a very hardy plant that doesn’t require much fertilization, but a light application of compost or a balanced, slow-release nutrient supply in the spring can be beneficial. Oregano can also grow in poor, dry conditions and doesn’t need fertilizer to produce its flavorful leaves.

Weed control
It involves manual removal (hand-pulling, digging roots), mulching (cardboard/newspaper/wood chips to block weeds), and cultural practices like planting in well-drained soil away from sprinklers; to contain aggressive oregano itself, use physical barriers (edging, trenching) or prune frequently to prevent seeding and spread. For severe invasion, sheet mulching (cardboard + heavy mulch) can kill it off, while some selective herbicides exist for commercial use but require careful application to avoid harming the oregano.

Harvest
Once oregano reaches 4 to 6 inches tall, it is ready to harvest. Harvest the leaves as needed throughout its growing season. To yield the best flavor, harvest the oregano as the plant’s flowers begin to bud. Harvest by pinching off individual leaves or clipping an entire branch. The leaves can be dried or frozen but store them away from direct light.

Seed Storage
The seeds will maintain a high germination percentage if stored under proper conditions. How long your seeds remain viable will depend on the temperature and moisture levels the seeds are exposed to. Seeds which are improperly stored will quickly deteriorate if unprotected against high humidity and dramatic temperature fluctuations day after day.

Glass jar or plastic containers with snap-on lids works well too, add a packet of desiccant before sealing into the seed, such as silica gel to remove any moisture remains in the storage container. Seed stored under these conditions will remain viable for as long as years.

Factors Which commonly Cause Poor Results

1. Improper drainage soil
2. Sowing depth more than one inch 
3. Covering the seed too deep beneath the soil surface
4. Cover a large area with a small amount of seed. 
5. Plant at a wrong time of a year
6. Lack of sunlight
7. Inadequate rainfall after seed germination. The area should not be allowed to become completely dry. Supplemental watering may be required to sustain plant life.
8. Extreme weather conditions: hail, drought, excessive rainfall, floods, unseasonably cold temperatures.
