Russel Lupine Seeds
When should I plant
Russell lupine seeds can be planted in either spring or fall, depending on your climate. In cooler regions, spring sowing (after the last frost) is ideal, while in milder climates, fall sowing allows seeds to stratify naturally over winter for stronger spring germination.
Spring Sowing
For spring planting, sow seeds after the danger of frost has passed and soil temperatures reach at least 55°F. This ensures optimal germination. Soaking seeds overnight or scarifying them can improve sprouting rates.
Fall Sowing
Fall planting is beneficial in areas with mild winters. Sow seeds 6–8 weeks before the first frost so they experience natural cold stratification, which breaks seed dormancy. This method often results in earlier and more vigorous blooms the following spring.
Site consideration
Choose a well-draining location with loose, slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 5.5–7.0). Lupines thrive in open areas but can tolerate some slope or meadow settings. Avoid heavy clay or waterlogged soils, which can cause root rot.
Water
Keep soil moist but not soggy during germination. Once established, lupines are drought-tolerant but benefit from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry spells. Overwatering can lead to fungal diseases.
Sunlight
Russell lupines prefer full sun (6+ hours daily) but can tolerate partial shade, especially in hotter climates. Insufficient sunlight may result in weaker stems and fewer blooms.
Seed Germination
Lupine seeds have a hard coat, so scarification (lightly scratching the seed coat) or soaking in water for 12–24 hours before planting improves germination. Germination typically takes 7–30 days at 55–70°F.
Seeding Rate
Sow seeds ¼ inch deep, spacing them 12–24 inches apart to allow for mature plant spread. For mass plantings, use 1–2 ounces of seed per 1,000 square feet. Thin seedlings if overcrowded.

Fertilization
Lupines fix nitrogen in the soil, so they require minimal fertilization. If needed, use a low-nitrogen, phosphorus-rich fertilizer sparingly. Excess nitrogen can lead to excessive foliage with fewer flowers.
Weed control
Keep the planting area weed-free, especially during early growth. Mulching helps retain moisture and suppress weeds. Once established, lupines compete well with weeds.
Seed Storage
The seeds will maintain a high germination percentage if stored under proper conditions. How long your seeds remain viable will depend on the temperature and moisture levels the seeds are exposed to. Seeds which are improperly stored will quickly deteriorate if unprotected against high humidity and dramatic temperature fluctuations day after day.

Glass jar or plastic containers with snap-on lids works well too, add a packet of desiccant before sealing into the seed, such as silica gel to remove any moisture remains in the storage container. Seed stored under these conditions will remain viable for as long as years.
Factors Which commonly Cause Poor Results
1. Improper drainage soil
2. Sowing depth more than one inch
3. Covering the seed too deep beneath the soil surface
4. Cover a large area with a small amount of seed.
5. Plant at a wrong time of a year
6. Lack of sunlight
7. Inadequate rainfall after seed germination. The area should not be allowed to become completely dry. Supplemental watering may be required to sustain plant life.
8. Extreme weather conditions: hail, drought, excessive rainfall, floods, unseasonably cold temperatures.
