Showy Milkweed Seeds
When should I plant
Showy Milkweed is a hardy native perennial that can be planted in either spring or fall, depending on your climate and gardening preference.
Spring Sowing
Sow seeds in early to mid-spring after the danger of hard frost has passed and the soil begins to warm. For best germination, seeds benefit from a cold stratification period (30–60 days of moist cold treatment). If stratification is done beforehand, seeds can germinate more quickly once planted.
Fall Sowing
Fall sowing is often the easiest method. Plant seeds outdoors in late fall after temperatures drop consistently. Winter conditions naturally provide the cold stratification required for germination, allowing seeds to sprout naturally the following spring.
Site consideration
Choose a planting site with well-drained soil and good air circulation. Showy Milkweed adapts to a wide range of soils, including sandy, loamy and clay, but it performs best in moderately fertile, well-drained conditions. Avoid overly wet or poorly drained areas.
Water
Keep soil lightly moist during germination and early seedling establishment. Once established, Showy Milkweed is drought-tolerant. It prefers dry to medium moisture levels. Be careful not to overwater, as this can lead to root rot. Deep but infrequent watering is ideal during extended dry spells.
Sunlight
Plant in full sun for best growth and flowering. Showy Milkweed typically requires at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight per day to produce strong stems and abundant blooms.
Transplant
Transplant on a cloudy day or in early morning/evening to reduce shock. Spring or fall is ideal. Use a sharp, long shovel to dig deep (12+ inches) around the plant to avoid breaking the taproot. Keep as much soil around the roots as possible and keep them moist during transport. Place in a sunny, well-drained spot, planting at the same depth it was previously growing. Water the plant well for the first 1-2 weeks to help it establish.
Seed Germination
Showy Milkweed seeds require a period of cold, moist stratification to break dormancy. Milkweed seeds usually germinate within 10–21 days under suitable conditions. Optimal germination occurs when the soil temperatures are around 65–75°F.
Seeding Rate
Showy milkweed typically requires a seeding rate of 6–11 lbs per acre for full stand establishment. For smaller areas, use 4 oz per 1,000 sq. ft. or approximately 20–30 seeds per sq. ft..

Fertilization
Showy Milkweed generally does not require heavy fertilization. In most soils, adding a small amount of compost or organic matter before planting is sufficient. Excess fertilizer may encourage leafy growth rather than flowering.
Weed control
Weed control is most critical during the first growing season. Young milkweed seedlings are delicate and can be easily outcompeted by fast-growing weeds. Hand-pull weeds carefully to avoid disturbing the milkweed's roots.
A light layer of mulch can help suppress weeds and retain moisture, but keep it away from the base of the plant stems. Avoid using heavy landscape fabric, as milkweed spreads via rhizomes and needs to be able to send up new shoots.
Once mature, the dense foliage of a milkweed patch will naturally suppress many weeds.
Seed Storage
The seeds will maintain a high germination percentage if stored under proper conditions. How long your seeds remain viable will depend on the temperature and moisture levels the seeds are exposed to. Seeds which are improperly stored will quickly deteriorate if unprotected against high humidity and dramatic temperature fluctuations day after day.
For best results, keep the seed in our moisture-proof ziplock sealing bags, which provide a better moisture prevention effect. Glass jar or plastic containers with snap-on lids works well too, add a packet of desiccant before sealing into the seed, such as silica gel to remove any moisture remains in the storage container. Seed stored under these conditions will remain viable for as long as years.
Factors Which commonly Cause Poor Results
1. Improper drainage soil
2. Sowing depth more than one inch
3. Covering the seed too deep beneath the soil surface
4. Cover a large area with a small amount of seed.
5. Plant at a wrong time of a year
6. Lack of sunlight
7. Inadequate rainfall after seed germination. The area should not be allowed to become completely dry. Supplemental watering may be required to sustain plant life.
8. Extreme weather conditions: hail, drought, excessive rainfall, floods, unseasonably cold temperatures.
