Sweet Basil Seeds
When should I plant
Basil grows best in warm weather, and basil seeds should be planted outdoors after all dangers of frost have passed. Plant seeds 1/4 inch deep and 12 inches apart in moist, well-draining soil. Seeds can be started indoors to give the plants an early start before outdoor planting. Plant indoors six weeks before the last frost date and place in a sunny windowsill. If planting in a container, use a larger pot to prevent plants from drying out in the summer heat.
Site consideration
Choose a site with full sun, warmth, and rich, well-draining soil (pH 6.0-7.5), adding compost for fertility and loosening compacted soil. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot and provide consistent moisture without waterlogging. After thinning, space plants 12-18 inches apart for bushy growth.
Water
Basil plants may need watering during the growing season. Water when the soil is dry about 5 cm below the surface (test by gently scratching away a little soil with your finger). Water deeply in the early morning or late afternoon. Avoid wetting the leaves to reduce the risk of fungal diseases.
Sunlight
Basil needs full sun, ideally 6 to 8 or more hours of direct light daily, for robust growth, strong flavor, and bushy leaves; provide at least this much sun when starting seeds indoors or transplanting outdoors, ensuring warmth (70-85°F) and consistent moisture for germination and early growth.
Seed Germination
Genovese basil seeds germinate best in warm conditions (70-85°F) within 7-14 days, requiring light to sprout, so sow shallowly (1/4" deep) in moist, well-draining soil, pressing seeds lightly into the soil instead of burying them. Keeping the soil consistently moist but not soggy to prevent damping off.
Transplant
Wait until all danger of frost has passed, nighttime temperatures are consistently above 50°F (10°C), and soil is warm (60-85°F). Harden off seedlings for 7-10 days, then plant in full sun, rich, well-draining soil. Bury stems up to the first leaves to encourage root growth. Spacing plants 6-12 inches apart. Water well and mulch to prevent weeds.

Fertilization
Since basil is a very fast-growing and leafy plant, it requires fertilizer. Upon planting, add organic nutrients to the soil such as compost, blood meal or cottonseed meal. Feed with liquid plant food every few weeks to encourage growth, but be sure to not use fertilizers that leave a harmful residue since you will be consuming the leaves.
Pruning
Basil should be pruned once the plant has six to eight leaves. After the basil plant is six weeks old, pinch off the center shoot to keep flowering at bay.
Weed control
For Basil weed control, use organic mulches (straw, wood chips) after soil warms, hand-weed young plants carefully to avoid roots, and employ techniques like stale seedbeds (for commercial growers) or plasticulture; good air circulation and planting density also prevent weed/disease issues.
Harvest
Basil leaves can begin to be harvested once the plant is 6 to 8 inches tall, typically 60 to 90 days after planting the seeds. Picking leaves regularly encourages more growth. Harvest the leaves by pinching them off of the stem, and always harvest from the top of the plant. Basil can be frozen to preserve its flavor, used fresh or dried.
Seed Storage
The seeds will maintain a high germination percentage if stored under proper conditions. How long your seeds remain viable will depend on the temperature and moisture levels the seeds are exposed to. Seeds which are improperly stored will quickly deteriorate if unprotected against high humidity and dramatic temperature fluctuations day after day.
For best results, keep the seed in our moisture-proof ziplock sealing bags, which provide a better moisture prevention effect. Glass jar or plastic containers with snap-on lids works well too, add a packet of desiccant before sealing into the seed, such as silica gel to remove any moisture remains in the storage container. Seed stored under these conditions will remain viable for as long as years.
Factors Which commonly Cause Poor Results
1. Improper drainage soil
2. Sowing depth more than one inch
3. Covering the seed too deep beneath the soil surface
4. Cover a large area with a small amount of seed.
5. Plant at a wrong time of a year
6. Lack of sunlight
7. Inadequate rainfall after seed germination. The area should not be allowed to become completely dry. Supplemental watering may be required to sustain plant life.
8. Extreme weather conditions: hail, drought, excessive rainfall, floods, unseasonably cold temperatures.
