Swiss Chard Rainbow Seeds
When should I plant
For the spring season, plant chard seeds 4-6 weeks before the last spring frost date. For a fall harvest, plant chard seeds about 40 days before the first fall frost date. (Many varieties will tolerate a light frost.) Soak the seeds in water for 24 hours before planting to speed up germination.
Site consideration
It prefers a location with moderately fertile, well-draining soil and a soil pH between 6.0 and 7.0 (slightly acidic to neutral). Before planting, mix aged manure and/or compost into the soil to boost soil fertility. Apply a general-purpose organic fertilizer on the soil one week before sowing, then rake the soil to a fine tilth.
Water
Water evenly and consistently, especially during dry summer periods. Water regularly to promote plenty of fresh leafy growth and to stop the plants from running to seed, or bolting, in dry weather. If they do bolt, they’ll no longer produce new leaves, so dig them up and add them to your compost pile.
Sunlight
Swiss chard grows best in full sun, receiving at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. However, it can tolerate partial shade, particularly in warmer climates where some afternoon shade helps prevent leaf stress and bolting.
Seed Germination
Swiss chard seeds germinate reliably under the right conditions, typically sprouting in 7 to 14 days. For best results, soak seeds overnight in room temperature water before planting to soften the seed coat and speed up germination. Sow seeds ½ to ¾ inch deep, spacing them about 1 to 2 inches apart in rows 12 to 18 inches apart. Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy during this period, as drying out can severely reduce germination rates.
Transplant
Although Swiss chard is usually direct sown, seeds can be started indoors 3–4 weeks before the last frost. Transplant seedlings outdoors once they have developed several true leaves. Harden off seedlings for 7 to 10 days before moving them to the garden, gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions. Space transplants 4 to 12 inches apart depending on desired leaf size, with rows 12 to 24 inches apart. Closer spacing produces smaller leaves suitable for baby greens, while wider spacing allows plants to reach full size. Water thoroughly after transplanting and protect from unexpected late frosts if needed.

Fertilization
Swiss chard benefits from fertile soil and responds well to regular feeding throughout its long growing season. Amend the soil generously with compost or well-rotted manure before planting to provide a strong nutritional foundation. About 4 to 6 weeks after planting, begin side-dressing with a balanced organic fertilizer or compost tea to support continuous leaf production. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can produce lush growth but may reduce the intensity of stem colors. Swiss chard is a cut-and-come-again crop that will produce over many weeks, so maintaining soil fertility throughout the season is important for sustained harvests.
Weed control
Managing weeds is important, particularly when plants are young and establishing. Swiss chard seedlings grow slowly at first and compete poorly with fast-growing weeds that steal nutrients, water, and sunlight. Gently hand-pull weeds or use shallow cultivation around plants, being careful not to disturb their shallow root systems. Once plants are established, their large leaves will help shade out many weeds, but regular maintenance is still needed. Mulching heavily with straw, leaves, or organic material is highly effective at suppressing weeds while conserving soil moisture and regulating soil temperature.
Harvest
You can begin harvesting baby leaves in about 30 days when plants reach 4 to 6 inches tall. For mature leaves, harvest typically begins 50 to 60 days after sowing. Use the "cut-and-come-again" harvesting technique, taking the largest, oldest leaves from the outside of the plant and leaving the young center leaves to continue growing. Cut leaves 1 to 2 inches above the soil line with a sharp knife or scissors, being careful not to damage the growing point. Regular harvesting encourages continuous production, and plants will provide multiple harvests throughout the season until hard frost.
Seed Storage
The seeds will maintain a high germination percentage if stored under proper conditions. How long your seeds remain viable will depend on the temperature and moisture levels the seeds are exposed to. Seeds which are improperly stored will quickly deteriorate if unprotected against high humidity and dramatic temperature fluctuations day after day.
For best results, keep the seed in our moisture-proof ziplock sealing bags, which provide a better moisture prevention effect. Glass jar or plastic containers with snap-on lids works well too, add a packet of desiccant before sealing into the seed, such as silica gel to remove any moisture remains in the storage container. Seed stored under these conditions will remain viable for as long as years.
Factors Which commonly Cause Poor Results
1. Improper drainage soil

3. Covering the seed too deep beneath the soil surface
4. Cover a large area with a small amount of seed.
5. Plant at a wrong time of a year
6. Lack of sunlight
7. Inadequate rainfall after seed germination. The area should not be allowed to become completely dry. Supplemental watering may be required to sustain plant life.
8. Extreme weather conditions: hail, drought, excessive rainfall, floods, unseasonably cold temperatures.
