Tropical Milkweed Seeds
When should I plant
Tropical Milkweed is a fast-growing plant often grown as an annual in cooler climates and as a perennial in warm regions. It is valued for its bright flowers and ability to attract butterflies and pollinators.
Spring Sowing Sow seeds outdoors in spring after the danger of frost has passed and soil temperatures begin to warm. Seeds can also be started indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost and transplanted outdoors once temperatures remain consistently warm.
Fall Sowing In warm climates or frost-free regions, seeds can be planted in early fall. Plants will continue growing and blooming through the mild season. In colder regions, fall sowing is generally not recommended because seedlings are sensitive to frost.
Site consideration
Choose a planting site with well-drained soil and good air circulation. Tropical Milkweed adapts to a wide range of soil types but grows best in moderately fertile, well-drained soils. It works well in garden beds, pollinator gardens, and containers.
Water
Keep the soil evenly moist during germination and early growth. Once established, tropical milkweed is moderately drought tolerant, but it performs best with regular watering, especially during hot weather.
Sunlight
Plant in full sun for optimal growth and flowering. Tropical Milkweed requires at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily to produce strong plants and abundant blooms.
Transplant
Transplant Tropical Milkweed after the danger of frost has passed and temperatures are consistently warm, ideally in late spring or early summer. Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil, and gently move the plant with its root ball intact, as it transplants easily compared to other milkweed species. Replant at the same depth, water thoroughly, and keep the soil evenly moist for the first one to two weeks to help establish roots. Once established, reduce watering and allow the plant to grow in place, as it adapts quickly and thrives with minimal care.
Seed Germination
Seeds typically germinate within 14–21 days under proper conditions. The ideal soil temperature for germination is 70–80°F. While not strictly necessary, a 24-hour soak in warm water speeds up germination. Lightly press seeds into the soil or cover with a very thin layer of soil.
Seeding Rate
Tropical milkweed is best sown at a rate of 2–4 seeds per spot or cell, spaced 18–24 inches apart, and covered lightly with 1/8 to 1/4 inch of soil. For larger areas, use a rate of 5 lbs per acre.

Fertilization
Tropical Milkweed grows well even in nutrient-poor soils and generally does not need fertilizer. If desired, a single application of good garden compost in spring is sufficient. Over-fertilizing, especially with nitrogen, will reduce flowering and may create lush growth that is more appealing to aphids.
Weed control
To control weeds near tropical milkweed without harming butterflies or caterpillars, manual hand-pulling is the safest method. Use mulch (wood chips or straw) to suppress new weeds and avoid herbicides, which can harm monarch larvae. Clear weeds early to avoid disturbing plants currently hosting caterpillars.
Seed Storage
The seeds will maintain a high germination percentage if stored under proper conditions. How long your seeds remain viable will depend on the temperature and moisture levels the seeds are exposed to. Seeds which are improperly stored will quickly deteriorate if unprotected against high humidity and dramatic temperature fluctuations day after day.
For best results, keep the seed in our moisture-proof ziplock sealing bags, which provide a better moisture prevention effect. Glass jar or plastic containers with snap-on lids works well too, add a packet of desiccant before sealing into the seed, such as silica gel to remove any moisture remains in the storage container. Seed stored under these conditions will remain viable for as long as years.
Factors Which commonly Cause Poor Results
1. Improper drainage soil
2. Sowing depth more than one inch
3. Covering the seed too deep beneath the soil surface
4. Cover a large area with a small amount of seed.
5. Plant at a wrong time of a year
6. Lack of sunlight
7. Inadequate rainfall after seed germination. The area should not be allowed to become completely dry. Supplemental watering may be required to sustain plant life.
8. Extreme weather conditions: hail, drought, excessive rainfall, floods, unseasonably cold temperatures.
