Winter Squash Waltham Butternut Seeds
When should I plant
Waltham Butternut is a warm-season crop that needs a long growing season. Direct sow seeds outdoors after all danger of frost has passed and soil temperatures reach at least 70℉. In short-season climates, start seeds indoors 3 to 4 weeks before your last frost date for transplanting later. These plants typically require 85 to 100 days to reach maturity.
Site consideration
Choose a planting location with full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Butternut squash grows best in rich loamy soil with a pH between 6.0 and 6.8. Work compost or well-rotted organic matter into the soil before planting to improve fertility and drainage. Provide plenty of space, as the vines can spread several feet.
Water
Provide consistent moisture throughout the growing season, especially during flowering and fruit development. Aim for about 1–1.5 inches of water per week. Water at the base of the plants to keep foliage dry and help reduce disease.
Sunlight
Waltham Butternut demands full sun, requiring at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight daily. More sun means better flowering, more fruit set, and sweeter squash.
Seeds typically germinate in 7–14 days when soil temperatures are between 70–90°F. Plant seeds about 1 inch deep. Sow 2–3 seeds per mound or planting spot and thin to the strongest seedling after germination.
Transplant
Since squash plants do not transplant well, peat pots are the best option. Plant two seeds per pot, later clipping off the weaker seedling. Harden the seedlings by exposing them to the weather for several hours at a time during the week before transplanting. About a week after the last frost or when the soil temperature reaches an average of 60℉, plant the seedlings in very rich soil 8-10' apart in rows 10-12' apart. Another option is to plant the seedlings in hills of two, 8-10' apart.

Fertilization
Butternut squash benefits from nutrient-rich soil. Incorporate compost before planting, and apply a balanced fertilizer once vines begin to grow. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can promote leaf growth at the expense of fruit production.
Weed control
Keep the growing area weed-free while plants are young. Hand-pull weeds carefully around young plants to avoid disturbing shallow roots. Once vines begin to run and shade the ground, they will naturally suppress most weed growth. Mulching with straw or black plastic can also be highly effective.
Harvest
Harvest typically occurs 85 to 100 days after planting, usually from late summer through fall before the first hard frost. The skin should be fully tan and hard enough that you cannot puncture it with your fingernail. The stem will begin to dry and turn cork-like. Use sharp pruners to cut fruits from the vine, leaving 2 to 3 inches of stem attached. Never carry squash by the stem, as it may break and create an entry point for rot.
Seed Storage
The seeds will maintain a high germination percentage if stored under proper conditions. How long your seeds remain viable will depend on the temperature and moisture levels the seeds are exposed to. Seeds which are improperly stored will quickly deteriorate if unprotected against high humidity and dramatic temperature fluctuations day after day.

Glass jar or plastic containers with snap-on lids works well too, add a packet of desiccant before sealing into the seed, such as silica gel to remove any moisture remains in the storage container. Seed stored under these conditions will remain viable for as long as years.
Factors Which commonly Cause Poor Results
1. Improper drainage soil

3. Covering the seed too deep beneath the soil surface
4. Cover a large area with a small amount of seed.
5. Plant at a wrong time of a year
6. Lack of sunlight
7. Inadequate rainfall after seed germination. The area should not be allowed to become completely dry. Supplemental watering may be required to sustain plant life.
8. Extreme weather conditions: hail, drought, excessive rainfall, floods, unseasonably cold temperatures.
